Russische vrouwen worden ook wel gezien als de mooiste vrouwen ter wereld met hun porseleinen gezichtjes en ellenlange benen, geen wonder dat hier veel fotomodellen vandaan komen. Beauty en fashion moet hier vast heel belangrijk zijn, aangezien Russische vrouwen zich graag mooi aankleden en verzorgen. Ik sprak met Yana Zubtsova, mede-eigenaresse van een van de grootste Russische beautyblogs Beautyinsider.ru, over Russische vrouwen, beauty en beautybloggers.
Ik heb al een tijdje leuk contact met Yana van Beautyinsider.ru, sinds ze mijn site een keertje had doorgelinkt op haar blog. Ik vroeg me af waar al die Russische bezoekers vandaan kwamen en voila, dat was dus via haar.
Beautyinsider.ru is een blog van twee Russische beauty editors. Yulia Grebenkina (editor van Elle.ru) en Yana zelf (ex-beauty director Harpers Bazaar Russia, Vogue Russia en deputy editor-in-chief CNS magazine) runnen deze blog sinds 1,5 jaar. Yana houdt van films, lezen, glossy magazines, fashion, reizen, haar zoon, haar man, haar moeder, haar hond, haar vrienden, Facebook, het Griekse eiland Corfu, de zomer, zoetigheid en goede wijn. Ze besteedt dagelijks zo'n 2 tot 3 uur aan Beautyinsider.ru and she loves it!
Ik stelde haar een aantal vragen over beauty gerelateerd aan Rusland en de Russische cultuur. Hieronder heb ik haar antwoorden neergezet. Ik twijfelde of ik het zou vertalen, maar uiteindelijk heb ik er voor gekozen dat niet te doen, omdat ik dan de schrijfstijl van Yana niet goed over zou kunnen brengen. Zoals ze schrijft is namelijk leuk en spontaan, en de meeste meiden die mijn blog lezen kunnen goed Engels. Mocht er toch behoefte zijn aan een vertalen, laat het me dan zeker weten, dan zal ik dat doen. Ok, hieronder het interview met Yana, enjoy!
1. What is the current beauty/make-up trend in Russia? And what hairstyle is trendy at the moment?
Well, i can not tell you about all russian girls - Russia is too big, we have 15 million citizens in Moscow only :) So let’s talk about advanced beauty-goers. I guess we are crazy about blue nails, we do like red lipstick and some of us pay too much attention to the eyebrows trying get them as bold as they could be :) As for hair, we like pony-tails, or ballerina buns. Anyway, hair has to be long. Colors are not so important. Blond, brown, red - whatever you like.
2. Which beautybrands are the most popular in Russia? And why do you think that is?
Nothing special - Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Vichy etc. They make a lot of ads, they have a lot of new products and some of them are nice :) People are too lazy to do research here. They go to the shops for brands which they have seen in magazines or TV. Our blog’s readers are the most adavanced - and, I hope, they will consider Kiehl’s, Dolce & Gabbana, La Prairie, La Mer, Bobbi Brown as well. But if we are talking about Russia in general, woman buy mostly Dior, Chanel... (I like those brands too, by the way) or - in mass-market - L’Oreal, Garnier, Maybelline...
3. Are there a lot of beautybloggers in Russia, and can you make a living of it?
No, there are just a few, compared to USA or UK. I can name just 50 blogs devoted to beauty - not to "beauty and my cat" if you know what I mean. And for all of us blogging is just a hobby, not business. Some of us are ready to do it as a business, some of us are not interested in it.
4. Do you keep in touch with other beautybloggers, do you meet them regularly?
Yes, we are in touch, but mostly on-line, than in a cafe. We read each others blog, we leave comments, but we live in different cities and even different countries. And even if some of us live in Moscow - you see, Moscow is really crazy city, sometimes it takes 3 hours to get the center... It is not easy to meet regularly!
5. Do you consider them as friends or colleages or enemies?
Some of them are friends. Some of them are colleages. Nobody is enemy!

6. Is there jealousy amongst beautybloggers? Or amongst readers (like, do you get hate mail?)
I guess, jealousy does exist. Unfortunately. But I am trying to keep my mind far from it. I am not ready "to be friends against somebody". I treat some bloggers like friends, some - just like bloggers, so what? I guess the best way to make your blog the best is to give it more time, effort, attention. But not to hate any other bloggers. As for readers - yes. Again - unfortunately. We do get some hate mails and comments. We try to say - "who cares?". It is not easy sometimes. But most of our readers are very, very smart, well-educated and nice!
7. Can you name a few old Russian natural beautytricks for me! Like the ones your mother or grandmothers used to teach you.
We put some pieces of cucumbers under our eyes to get rid of puffyness. We put kilos of strawberry on our faces to make them look younger. We use coffee as a scrub in saunas. We use lemon juice as hair color - to make the hair blonde... What else?.. Hmm... Oh. Yes, we sleep in gloves and socks! My mom told me: 'if you want to get soft hands or feet, put some cream on them, then put on gloves or socks and go to bed!'.
8. Do all Russian women take good care of their looks? They never leave the house without make-up, high heels and good clothes?
No. We do go out without heels. We do go out with naked faces (personally, I do that). Some of us can go to the next-door shop in pijamas :) But in general - in Moscow - woman really take care about high heels, mascara and all this stuff. If you compare us to other European countries, you can feel the difference - make up, lipstick or something like this... You will see it more than in Paris, London or Berlin, for sure.
9. Can you name a few typical Russian beauty brands that they don't sell in the Netherlands, but are really worth trying when I visit Russia?
Unfortunately, no. We have some brands which are not bad, but I can not say you will miss them...
10. Who do you think is the most beautiful Russian woman? And who is the most popular it-girl of Russia right now? The one that you see in every magazine and every Russian girl wants to look like her?
Well, you know the name - Natalia Vodianova!
Ik wil Yana hartelijk bedanken voor dit leuke interview! Hierdoor heb ik een beter beeld van de Russische vrouwen, Russische beauty trends en Russische beautyblogs. Het is leuk om te lezen dat alles niet eens zo heel veel verschilt ten opzichte van Nederland. Wat me wel opviel is dat er zo weinig beautyblogs zijn voor zo'n groot land, terwijl ze naar mijn idee meer geld aan beauty besteden (vergeleken met Nederland) en graag met de trends meelopen. En ik had ook geen idee dat Moskou ZO enorm was, 3 uur van de ene kant naar de andere kant, insane! Wij lopen hier in Nederland al te klagen als we een uur moeten reizen...
